Shrien Dewani and his wife Anni Hindocha were visiting South Africa for the first time in November 2010 for their honeymoon and it ended in tragedy. New bride Anni was murdered when their taxi was hijacked by armed robbers, while the groom managed to jump out of the moving taxi. He returned to the UK alone as the investigation continued.
However, the story told by the taxi driver, Zola Tongo, and the two armed robbers, when they were arrested, showed it was not so accidental. Their testimony revealed that the husband had paid them to kill his wife. Of course he denied it, what reason would he have to kill his beautiful young new wife?
Well, a gay prostitute, Leopold Leisser, came out to say Dewani was a regular customer of his and had killed his wife so as to continue a gay lifestyle without his family's interference.
After confessing, the taxi driver and the robbers were sentenced to different terms in jail. Zola, the driver is serving 18 years in prison for his role for hiring the men, while the murderers got life sentences.
Shrien was extradited back to South Africa from the UK in April 2014 to face murder charges.
Today, during the trial, footage of Shrien Dewani handing money to the taxi driver, Zola Tongo, was played to the court. The money was meant to have the driver hire people to kill his wife.
One video clip shown to the courtroom, Dewani is captured leading Tongo down a hotel corridor to a quiet room, carrying a small bag of money. The taxi driver is dressed in a white shirt, shorts and a pale cap, and follows Dewani down the corridor.
This is just so sad. The man even looks like he's smiling in the clips from the CCTV footage. What wickedness!
